Dog Ear Publishing releases “…Won’t Come Home” by Jeffrey Morris

A modern-day nomad scarred by family and drugs works to get sober in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Staying sober – never an easy task – means facing issues he has avoided his whole life.

Jake Preston, a 22-year-old drifter, walking along Route 99 near Fresno in California, hasn’t been home since he took off during spring break of his senior year in high school. Jake, who sports a scraggy beard, greasy blond hair and shabby clothes, stars in this debut novel about a drifter still feeling the effects of his mother’s death seven years earlier, and subsequent arguments with his father, medication, psychiatrists and hospitalization. This coming-of-age tale shadows the ups and downs of Jake’s life as he works to survive the best he knows how.

“…Won’t Come Home,” set in the San Joaquin Valley, Wyoming oilfields and Texas Gulf Coast, offers an inside look at the psyche of a young man living with the double demons of drugs and alcohol, working jobs just to get enough money to survive and get his next fix. When he ends up in a relationship, things become too much to handle, and he hits the road again, lured by the siren call of living only for himself. It’s not easy living this way, and the consequences eventually take their toll. A timely visit from Jake’s sister prevents a desperate act, but can Jake crawl back from the abyss that has become his life and face family issues and responsibilities he has run from his entire life? The conversational style and intricate detail highlight the humanity of this compelling first novel about a man challenged to shoulder his responsibilities and do the right thing.

Author Jeffrey Morris served in the U.S. Navy before studying engineering and then English at Ohio State University. He worked in research and development, as well as in manufacturing, and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English from SUNY Cortland. He left a job with a Colorado utility company so he could spend more time writing. Morris has three children, and he and his second wife, Jean, live in Colorado. He is already working on his second book.
